She has spent her career working in the fields of non-profit and higher education on issues of educational access and social justice. During this time she has worked for Tufts, Brandeis and Bentley Universities, and The Posse Foundation, among others, as she honed her skills in program and curriculum design and youth leadership development. She received her BA in English from Williams College and her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan.
Juan Manny Gonzalez, Heart of the Community Honoree
Juan “Manny” Gonzalez is a longtime public servant, community advocate, and mayoral candidate based in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Born in Maunabo, Puerto Rico, and raised in Lawrence after relocating with his family in 1982, Manny has dedicated more than three decades to serving the community through public safety, youth mentorship, and civic leadership. A graduate of Lawrence High School, he studied Physical Education at Salem State College before earning an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from North Shore Community College. He has served with the Lawrence Fire Department since 1996 and has been recognized as Firefighter of the Year five times. In addition to his work as a firefighter, Manny has served as a licensed private investigator, a member of the Lawrence Auxiliary Police, and co-founded Heal Lawrence, a support program for fire victims. A committed community leader, he currently serves on the board of the Lawrence Emergency Fund and has volunteered extensively with the Lawrence Boys & Girls Club, Central Little League, and several Puerto Rican cultural organizations throughout the city. Manny is a proud husband, father, and grandfather whose lifelong commitment to Lawrence continues through his candidacy in the 2025 mayoral election.
